Brock Road bakery stall broken into overnight

The owner of an ‘honesty box’ stall which sells cookies that he bakes himself has appealed for witnesses after the stall was broken into on Thursday night.

James Manger has run the Blue Chicken House Bakery stall in Brock Road, St Peter Port, since March and said that it had built up quite a following.

While his home-made cookies are the mainstay, he occasionally sells cinnamon buns, which he also bakes himself.

But this morning he had a shock when he went to check the stall.

‘When I turned up there this morning and opened it up it took me a minute to process what had happened,’ he said.

The cash box had been ripped out of the wall, the card reader and camera stolen and damage caused that he estimates will cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

He called the police immediately and said he was asked to help find anyone in the area who might have CCTV or doorbell footage from during the night that might help identify the perpetrators.

Mr Manger, a professional chef, said he had only recently entered into an arrangement with Surf & Turf to sell his cookies, which are also available at Guernsey Airport. But the honesty box location was something special. ‘I feel it’s almost like a little community,’ he said.

‘We started off with the idea that we wanted to make something with local produce, and I use Guernsey butter and

eggs. It’s something we’re incredibly proud of, and it’s sad to think that one selfish act could put things like this at risk.’

Speaking yesterday morning, he had not decided about the stall’s future.

‘I’m going to sit down for half an hour and have a think,’ he said.

Deputy Lee Van Katwyk said: 'An attack on one of our hedge veg stalls is an attack on us all.'

Police said an officer would be speaking to Mr Manger.
