Bisson finds demo putter to his liking
DANNY BISSON might be making another quick visit to the pro shop at L’Ancresse before he heads out on his Island Championship quarter-final today.
However, considering how well it served him, he probably has not yet returned the demonstration putter he borrowed yesterday afternoon for his second round match with Sam Le Huray.
The Scotty Cameron putter brand is world-renowned in golf and surely they are about to make another sale with Bisson taking a mere 20 putts for 16 holes in his victory.
Of course, it is not really down to the club but the golfer wielding it and Bisson felt that he made up for not holing much in his first-round win on Monday by draining nearly everything he looked at last night.
Such was the red-hot nature of his opponent’s putting that, having just made a brilliant recovery from thick rough after he had hooked his drive to leave no more than 12ft for a birdie while Bisson was still double that distance from the hole, Le Huray muttered that there was no point in reading the line of his putt as he would not get the chance to try for his three.
He was right, too, as Bisson found the dead centre of the cup for one last time to seal victory.
They had been all square at the turn in a match that took on added significance even before they started.
With no disrespect intended to Mark Allez, when news filtered through that Nigel Vaudin had withdrawn due to injury, it was obvious that whoever won between Bisson and Le Huray would be hot favourite to make the semi-final.
Once through the front nine, though, Bisson took advantage of small errors from his opponent and kept striking hammer blows to Le Huray with his relentless holing out once that demo ‘flatstick’ was in his hands to book that match with Allez.
The other quarter-final in the top half of the draw will give Danny Blondel the chance for revenge against Wayne Harwood, who beat the island champion in the Hampshire Sevens last weekend but today the La Grande Mare man will not be in receipt of any shots from the top seed.
Blondel cruised through last evening’s encounter with George Melhuish while Harwood continued his fine form to beat Ben Rolph.
In the bottom half of the draw, Daniel Griggs held off Mick Marley’s fightback to set up a quarter-final with Wayne Moore, who beat Arthur Evans by the same 1 up score.
The other last-eight clash will be between Jamie Blondel and Dave Nicolle, who were convincing winners over Neil Tanguy and David Robinson respectively.
