MAYA LE TISSIER dreams of featuring in the Olympic Games for Team GB one day, but admits that ‘three years may be too soon’ for her to achieve her goal.

Le Tissier has featured for England at youth level for a number of years now and has captained the England U15 and U17 sides.

The Guernsey-born defender was also recently included in Goal’s top 10 young footballers in the world countdown at the 2021 NXGN awards, being the only player from the UK named on the list.

A big target now for Le Tissier is winning Olympic gold, but the Brighton & Hove Albion youngster feels there is ‘a long way to go,’ before she breaks into the Great Britain squad.

‘It is going to take improvement and a lot more experience for me to get to that level and to be able to bring something else to the team.

‘I want to go and win the gold medal at the Olympic Games – that’s the goal now. Every British player wants to represent GB in the Olympics so I need to keep my head down and keep working hard to get that opportunity.’

The former St Martin’s youth player also spoke about the upcoming Women’s Super League season and said the main aim was to ‘do better than we did last season.’

‘We need to be consistent and we need to get the results against the teams we should really be beating.’

She outlined her individual targets for the 2021-22 campaign, too, saying that she wanted to ‘get her head down, keep getting game time and carry on improving on and off the pitch’.

‘I want to test myself against the best players in the world,’ she added.

Le Tissier also discussed the current Great Britain side’s chances and believes that the team can go all the way and claim Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020.

The Brighton defender has first-hand experience competing against the majority of the GB team and said ‘all of the players are outstanding individuals’.

This comes following an extremely successful start to the tournament for the women’s football side – they have seen off Chile and Japan in their first two games before Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Canada to seal a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

‘It is great to watch,’ said Le Tissier, who went on to describe the key factors that will decide whether Team GB can go the distance and claim gold.

‘As long as they can work together as a team and get some good play going under the new manager, I am certain they can win it all.

‘With the quality they have on the pitch, they could go all the way for sure. The players are just outstanding.’

Le Tissier cited captain Steph Houghton alongside Kym Little and Lucy Bronze as being the stand-out names for Great Britain, although the player she said was as tough to mark as anybody was Manchester City winger Lauren Hemp.

‘She’s so quick, so difficult to defend against. She’s a great player.’

Fran Kirby was also mentioned as another important figure in the camp, although the Chelsea forward has yet to feature for Team GB after sustaining a knock in training prior to the Olympics.

‘Hopefully she’ll be back for the remaining games, she’s a brilliant player.’
