Hedge law 'will make sure job gets done'

HAVING the power to fine those who fail to cut hedges or clear cuttings will make a big difference and stop repeat offenders, parish officials have said, as a new law is set to come into force from the beginning of next month.

Douzeniers and constables make their final inspection of the year on 30 September.

After an ordinance was passed by the States in December, the representatives will now be able to impose an initial £50 fine from 1 September, but with safeguards such as a right of appeal to a tribunal.

The problem of obscured road signs and traffic signals due to overgrown trees and hedges was highlighted by the Environment Department last year and parish officials raised concerns about cuttings not being picked up.

However, St Martin's constable Gerry Tattersall, was among those who felt the new law would encourage people to 'get the job done'.
