Participants had the choice of a 20km route starting and ending at Port Soif, a 10km walk from Pembroke or walking around Herm.
They have raised about £9,000 so far for four charities – This Is EPIC, The Eleanor Foundation, Christian Aid, and the Tumaini Fund. The States’ Overseas Aid & Development Commission will match the walkers’ total donation, meaning the final amount will probably exceed £20,000.
Walk chairwoman Vicky Groulef expected to set a new fundraising record this year.
‘I was speaking to an older couple earlier who said they’ve been doing it for years, it’s become a tradition for them on the first May Bank Holiday, and I think they're representative of so many here today,’ she said.
‘It’s a generational thing. People get their t-shirts, come together and walk for a good cause.’
Walk marketing co-ordinator Louise Smith said more than 780 people signed up for the full walk, 450 opted for the half walk, and the 200-strong Herm walk had sold out.
‘It’s just a brilliant effort from everyone – a huge thank you to all those who have turned out,’ she said.
Among the first timers taking part were Hannah Snell and her mother, Ginny Rundle.
‘I’ve been trying to lose weight, and I thought the walk would be a good thing to try out as part of that,’ said Miss Snell.
‘I’m proud of Hannah for what she’s trying to do, so thought she could use some support today,’ said Ms Rundle.
‘We are a mum and daughter dream team.’
Fellow first timers Andy and Robyn Moore said they were persuaded to do the walk by their eight-year-old son, Beau.
‘He’s been really keen to do it. He’s been practicing going on long walks,’ said Mr Moore.
‘I’m really excited.
‘It’ll be the furthest I’ve ever walked,’ said Beau at the start of the event.
More experienced walkers included Cathy Van Vliet and her grandson, Ryan, 10.
‘This is the third or fourth time we’ve done it,’ she said.
‘I like the walking, but I’m most looking forward to the ice cream at the end. I think we’ll deserve one,’ said Ryan.
