The local Friends of Citizens Advice has welcomed a young new chairwoman.

Though new to the charity, 37-year-old Eleanor Round is a keen volunteer on the island, and has been appointed to take over from Alison Vine.

‘I feel honoured to have been trusted with this important role,’ she said.

‘I’ve always been interested and involved in charities to some extent since school. After recently completing the certificate in company directorship with the IoD, I wanted to combine my love of helping charitable causes with what I’ve learned on the course and I thought this was the perfect opportunity.’

Friends of Citizens Advice raised funds for Citizens Advice Guernsey.

Its shop, in Mont Arrive, is run entirely by volunteers as the primary source of income for the charity.

Miss Round, who also volunteers at both Leo and Lions clubs and is team leader for a Meals on Wheels rota, said she was excited for her new challenge. The four current members of the Friend’s of Citizens Advice board have welcomed her ‘fresh pair of eyes’.

Miss Round said she hoped to expand the team and encourage more people to join.

‘I like getting involved in the island and I think this a great charity to support,’ she said.

‘Citizens Advice helps people in need, whether its financially or with family or relationships – any kind of struggle or hardship – it’s there and it’s free. I think the first port of call for most people is Google, but you need a more personal touch to some things. You need someone who’s trained in local matters, laws, regulations, that sort of thing to be able to advise you on your personal matter, and on a one-on-one tailored basis. It goes further than Google.’

The charity will hold its black tie Gala Ball at the Farmhouse Hotel on Saturday 4 October. At £75 per person, tickets include champagne on arrival and a three-course meal. There will be live music performed by The 22s and a silent auction.

Anyone keen to discover more about the charity, or book a table at the gala can get in touch at friends@citizensadvice.org.gg. Tables are available for groups of 10-12, but smaller groups can also be accommodated.
